The NBA season is over, the NHL is done for now, the NFL is still six weeks away and baseball is in the dull days of summer. As sports and content sites, we always strive to find content to produce around this time of year. Some of us create our own Mount Rushmores of things, others go on vacation and produce ever-green content that can entertain at any given time.
I want to do some things similar to that, but this is also a good opportunity for my audience to know more about me along the way. So each week this summer, until the NFL finally returns (and maybe even after) I'll be post lists of my favorite things. That way everyone can learn more about me without the need for me to make a post telling everyone everything about me!
So I'm going to start with something that I've wanted to rank for a while now: my top five favorite season of TV! This is a good way to get around TV shows that aren't completely good but you like them anyway. A list like this allows me to put Game of Thrones on the list while ignoring the fact that Season 8 exists. So without any further adieu, let's jump into my top five favorite TV shows - starting with number five!
*spoilers for every show to follow*
5) The Walking Dead - Season 1
The first season of The Walking Dead is a season I'll put up against any other season of TV. It perfectly mixes horror and suspense with family drama as we learn about the aftermath of the world post some-crazy-disease that turns all of our loved ones into walkers.
4) Arrow - Season 2
The first season of Arrow gave me faith in the ability for Superhero TV shows to succeed on the CW. Smallville had some incredible highs but even more lows, and up until Arrow came on the air, we didn't know how good superhero shows could be.
Arrow Season 1 did its best Batman imitation, but starting in Season 2, the show fully embraced its dark side and delve deep into the DC Universe lore that made the show so great. Stephen Amell cemented his place as the best superhero on TV in this season and Slade Wilson - played by Manu Bennett - is still one of my favorite bad guys on television.
And although the show never reached the highs of Season 2 (except for the first half of Season 3 and the end of Season 6), this second season hooked me on the show and made me care about this entire world.
3) Barry - Season 2
I never thought I'd find a show that was funnier and darker than Bojack Horseman, but boy was I wrong. Barry perfectly bounces from a hilarious moment to moment of darkness and sorrow as characters grieve over the death of loved ones. This show, despite it being a comedy, has tons of weight and consequence to it. This show overall is one of the best shows through two seasons that I have ever seen. I enjoyed every single minute of this show and my eyes were glued to the screen the whole series.
I have no problem saying that these first two seasons of Barry are far and away better than the last two seasons of Game of Thrones.
2) The Flash - Season 1
A lot of the same praise I gave the Arrow I need to give to the Flash here. The entire cast from the Flash has amazing chemistry and their dedication to bringing these comic book heroes to life makes you want to join them each week as they solve CSI crimes and stop meta-humans in Central City.
In Season 1 specifically, Barry's battle with the Reserve-Flash was a story-line that kept you hooked from episode 1 all the way until the final seconds of the season finale. There were tons of twists and turns that even surprised comic book readers like myself. The plot-twist of Wells being Eobard Thawne is and always be an incredible moment when you couple that with the fact that he mentored Barry and was Barry's hero for so much of his life.
Also the theme music is awesome and Blake Neely deserves credit for creating three different scores for the Arrow-verse.
1) Game of Thrones - Season 4
The Mountain and the Viper, The Watchers on the Wall, The Children, and The Lion and the Rose. These three episodes by themselves could all be in contention for some of the greatest episodes of television ever. The fact that they're all in the same season is an incredible testament to how great this TV show is.
This season reached the pinnacle of tragedy, sorry, and joy. All emotions that exemplified what it means to be a Game of Thrones fan. Tyrion gives one of the best speeches in show history during his trial, we see the death of Joffrey, and we watch the most suspenseful duel in the show end with the cruelest twist of fate.
